Be careful of the company that you keep! These words of caution are repeated throughout the book of Proverbs, and I am grateful for them. In particular, with this verse, there is a blessing on one side of it, and a warning on the other.
The blessing is that if we seek out people who value godly wisdom, then we ourselves will continue to grow in this area. And since there is no end to the wisdom of God, our journey of growth continues throughout our lifetimes (and eternity). This is actually a wonderful thing!
However, the warning for all of us is that if we surround ourselves with people who the Bible refers to as “fools” (those who dismiss or disregard the wisdom of God), then we are in real danger of becoming more like them – eventually reaping a harvest of harmful consequences from our foolish choices. Think about it: Life is already hard enough – who wants to contend with any unnecessary foolishness?
So let’s walk wisely, friends, and make sure that we’re headed in the right direction – forward! – with like-minded (and like-hearted) fellow travelers.
This marks the third installment in the “three quotes in three days” series. I selected this verse from Proverbs 13 because I believe that true wisdom is the foundation of a strong life of faith that brings glory and honor to God. Think about it – without biblical wisdom, what could we possibly say or do that would be of any (eternally) lasting value?
Some food for thought…. 🍊
