Alive + Blessed + Grateful

As I was contemplating the things for which I am most thankful this past week, I saw this image on Pinterest (I’m thinking that maybe I should create an account for all of the images I’ve collected for Daily Hopeful and Daily Thankful since I started blogging in 2016, but that’s a post for another day!), and I thought, “Yes – this image sums up my life right about now”:

To me, the three words – alive, blessed, and grateful – are interrelated. To wake up for another day and enjoy some measure of good health is a blessing, and to recognize the Lord’s sustaining benevolence to us is an act of gratitude. It’s not enough to simply be alive – we must acknowledge life for the blessing that it is, recognize Who has given us this gift, and remember to say a simple “thank you” each day that we wake up on this side of eternity.

As you ponder that thought, let me share some of the everyday blessings that the good Lord bestowed on me this past week:

Truly, God is in the details! Back when I used to serve more consistently in children’s ministry at my church, there was a little boy who was very dear to my heart. As it turns out, he and his family are moving overseas to be missionaries, and I’d hoped that I would get the chance to see him before he left. As time slipped away, this didn’t happen, and I had assumed that he and his family had already moved. Well, it just so happened that I had to be at church on Sunday for a meeting โ€“ I usually go to church on Saturday, by the way โ€“ and as I was walking back to my car following the meeting, I recognized the back of the head of a little boy who looked awfully familiar to me. I thought to myself, “No, it couldn’t be.” I was wrong, though! I called out the little boy’s name, and he turned around and smiled. We waved at each other, and I wish him and his family safe travels overseas. Seeing him really gladdened my heart – especially since I thought he had already left town!
For three consecutive days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), I was treated to a meal by three different friends quite unexpectedly! It’s remarkable to me how kind and generous my friends are – treating me to a meal “just because”. What a blessing!
As I was headed to meet some friends on Sunday, I got stuck in a terrible traffic jam. It took me about 48 minutes to go 7.8 miles, but when I heard that the source of the snarling traffic was not one, but two different auto accidents, I thought to myself, “But for the grace of God, that could have been me!” As I passed the accident scene, I briefly prayed for the safety of the people involved in the incident (including the first responders). Who knows? Maybe God had me there for that very reason – after all, prayer makes a difference.

No doubt, there are other things that happened for which I am most grateful, but these are the ones that I wanted to highlight for this post.

Wishing you the Lord’s very best in the week ahead. ๐Ÿ’›

      1. I’m really happy to be back! Going on a trip like that makes you appreciate what a blessing it is to just be able to communicate with everyone easily in your home country (I speak a little German, but not much. Luckily most Germans speak some English). It was really lovely catching up with my sister, though!

Hope your week is going well so far? ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

      2. From your photos, it looked like you and your sister had a grand time! Still, I know what you mean about being glad to be back home. ๐Ÿ™‚

So far so good this week! Just taking things one day at a time. How are things with your neighbor?

      3. Taking things day by day is always good โ€“ I believe the Bible says as much! (Matthew 6:34).

Things are okay with my neighbour, thanks. I’ve got a meeting scheduled for tomorrow to talk things through with housing manager / housing association. Bit anxious about that as I really don’t know what the best thing to do is. I’ve been praying about it a lot. Things really aren’t too bad with him at the moment so I’m reluctant to rock the boat too much!

      4. How did the meeting go?? I can email you off-line if youโ€™d rather not talk about it in the comments.

I take it that the World Cup is over, then? (Can you tell that I donโ€™t watch television?) ๐Ÿ˜‰ I know that the noise levels definitely were down when the games were on….

  1. Thank you so much for sharing such beautiful thoughts, my friend. I’m so glad that you got to see the little boy and his family. Prayer does make a great difference. I believe that God delayed you to pray. Have a blessed week!

    1. Thank you for such a kind and encouraging comment, dear friend! ๐Ÿ’› Yes, Iโ€™m happy that I saw the little boy, too. ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad to have helped on the prayer front, but getting stuck in the gridlock traffic was no fun!
