Rest

I came across this verse in Ecclesiastes 4 the other day, and was reminded of the importance of rest in our daily routines! It feels like things are getting busier and busier, and yet God’s anecdote to a frenzied schedule is a simple one: rest.

From personal experience, I’ve learned that God gives us two choices when it comes to rest: Either we can choose to rest voluntarily, or the Lord will orchestrate circumstances that force us to rest. Either way, the rest will happen.

And while I generally try to prioritize rest in my life, I know that I could be doing a better job in this area. Also, it’s important to remember that rest doesn’t necessarily always equate to sleep; in my view, it simply means to intentionally relaxing the mind and body for a set period of time. There are lots of different ways to rest, when you stop and think about it!

I make a point of resting fairly consistently on Sundays, and I have come to truly savor those times! However, I wonder if the Lord is trying to get my attention about the other six days of the week….💡

Will you pray with me?

Dear Lord, I thank You for bringing this verse to my attention this week. While I do try to rest, I recognize that this is an area where I can always improve. Through the power of Your Holy Spirit, would You please help me to regularly focus my attention – mind, body, and spirit – on God-honoring experiences and opportunities that promote renewal and relaxation? Also, please remind me that I do so not out of some sense of legalistic obligation, but rather because doing things Your way – in this case, enjoying regular intervals of rest and relaxation – is always a healthy and wise way to live. In Your name I pray, amen.

  1. Ugh! Those hormonal nights of sleeplessness. I don’t know if that’s what you mean, but I finally gave up and gave in to God – I figured He was wanting me to spend my tossing and turning in a better way, so I started praying and reading my Bible. Resting in Him, so to speak.

    1. For me, the sleeplessness was due to an overactive mind – there was somewhere I had to be that morning, and I was afraid I would not get up in time! 😮 I made it – I was just tired, ironically.

I like your strategy! Prayer and Bible reading are a very productive way to use the time when insomnia strikes. 💛
