Sun + Shield

This passage from Psalm 84 is one of my favorites. Why? Well, in it we learn more about God’s character and His ways.

When I read “sun,” I think of life-giving and life-sustaining energy that the sun provides for all of us. In a far more substantial way, the Lord is our sun (and Son), giving us life and light — illuminating our next step in a situation, and equipping us with insight about how to best respond.

When I think of “shield,” I am reminded of God our Protector. He watches over us, and often shields us from dangerous situations about which we were completely unaware. And nothing will ever come to us that He had not either ordained or allowed for yet-unknown purpose.

I could go on, but will pause here and instead ask how this verse is striking you. Any thoughts?

  1. I think, as well, of a sun shield. He is both our sun, and a shield from that sun. He knows we can only take/stand/tolerate so much of Him: we are limited. I sometimes feel I might explode if I get any more of God in me – my finite person can’t take all of Him. He knows us, created us; He will shield us even from too much of Him.

  2. Well, I think, Sun refers to His Righteousness (Malachi 4:2) and Shield refers to Jehovah-Nissi (my banner of victory). He clothes us with His Righteousness because our righteousness is but filthy rags before Him and He is our great Defender, Protector.
